Date: ca. late 19th /beginning 20th century
A small writing desk with bags of charm from the late 19th century with a predominantly neoclassical look. The desk is made of warmly patinated walnut wood. The desk has an up-stand that is flanked with two small stationary drawers, ornamented with frieze patterns and bronze knobs, and is surmounted with a neoclassical sculpted ribbon. The writing surface surmounts a large drawer, also with a frieze pattern, and has an arts & crafts style pull handle. The fluted legs are connected to a stretcher shelf.
Dimensions: 105 cm high to top of ribbon, 75 cm high to writing surface, 43 x 69.5 cm writing surface, 11 kg
Condition: Good. Used. There are some minor superficial scratches on the writing surface. On the inside of the large drawer there is a drawing that has been left there by some mischievous child (I thought it a pity to remove this part of the piece’s history). One corner has been scuffed (see photo).
