Date: Late 19th century
A winning combination of the charming old with the quirky modern. This caned library tub chair, also known as a ‘Fauteuil de bureau’ in French, has been given a new life fit for a modern interior with this faux blue fur fabric; the high density foam cushion (non-removable) make it very comfortable. The chair, made of glowingly patinated walnut wood, has been made in the Louis XV Rococo style and has sculpted flower and shell ornaments to the top rail, apron and knees, as well as the typical cabriole legs. The chair really looks as if it could be 18th century but it is from the late 19th century, as is testified by the fact that it was one upholstered with springs (and this was only done as of the mid-19th century).
Dimensions: 90 cm high to top rail, 51 cm high to seat, 58 cm wide apron, 43 cm depth seat, 9 kg
Condition: Used and adapted. The chair has had previous restoration to one of the legs and the seat frame to the back (which shows a space – see photo); it is, however, very sturdy. A small piece of veneer is missing from the back frame (see photo). There are two small areas where the caning is damaged but these are practically invisible unless pointed out. The nicks and dents to the wood are consistent with the chair’s age.
