Date: ca. late 19th /beginning 20th century
This church prayer chair (also known as a ‘Prie Dieu’) features a bible box, sculpted cross with gothic ornaments, turned front legs and stretcher, and the typical padded elbow rest for the pray pose. It has been painted in a turquoise blue colour and has been reupholstered with an Art Deco inspired fabric with stylized peacock tail motif in corresponding colours. The edges have been finished with a black trimming and silver coloured tacks.
The chair is most likely to be Belgian or French in origin.
Dimensions: 94 cm high to top, 36 cm high to seat, 44 cm wide, 38 cm seat depth, 49 cm deep with bible box and seat, 7 kg
Condition: Used and adapted. The chair is not in its original form and required restoration and redoing. One of the cross arms had been broken off and this has been repaired by means of a new backing applied to the whole back of the cross for durable strength. The bible box was clearly broken off at some point and displays gaps on the inside joints (see photo). The seating has been reupholstered with new webbing, foam seat and fabric.
