Date: ca 1900
A decorative and very charming little work table from the Art Nouveau period that can be used as a side table (or even as a bed side table). The table is made of nicely patinated oak wood and features a lift-lid decorated with an inlaid checkerboard motif, a large compartment under the lid, two small drawers, a stretcher shelf, and tapered square legs. The bowed lines in combination with the straight lines are reminiscent of the style of Gustave Serrurier-Bovy (Belgian architect and furniture designer of the Art Nouveau style). The interior of the lid is lined with a textile that seems to be authentic of the period.
Dimensions: 75 cm high, 39 x 55 cm table top, 50 x 33.5 cm main structure, 8 kg
Condition: Restored. The table is not in perfect condition and has had restorations: the moulded edge of the top’s right side has been replaced (see photo); the stains (ink?) on the stretcher shelf have been removed and camouflaged to the best possible degree but remain visible (see photo) and have somewhat damaged the wood fiber. One of the brass rings under the drawer knob is missing (but is only noticeable when pointed out). These defects (which are reflected in the low price) do not detract from the table’s overall esthetic qualities and it remains a lovely piece with loads of decorative charm.
