Date: Mid 20th century- ca. 1950
This is an elegant pair of small candlesticks by one of Belgium’s most renowned silversmiths, Wolfers. The candlesticks are made from silver-gilt (also known as Vermeil) and white onyx. The high grade solid silver (925/1000) has been coated with a layer of gold. The base and top rims have been adorned with a neoclassical style frieze motif. The maker’s marks of the Boar’s head above W in a barrel shape, and the A925 in an oval help date this piece to post 1942.
Wolfers became famous primarily thanks to the fabulous Art Nouveau jewelry created by Philippe Wolfers (1858-1929), whose father before him opened a jeweler’s shop in Brussels in 1850. In 1885 the company was renamed ‘Louis Wolfers père et fils’ and in 1897, upon Louis’ death, it became ‘Wolfers Frères’. The silversmithing legacy has been continued to date by the family and has been operated under the name ‘Maison Wolfers Frères’ since 1935.
Dimensions: 11 cm high, 7.3 cm diameter of base, 0.146 kg each
Condition: Very Good. The gilt layer has not thinned at all, with the exception of one small area on the rim (see photo).
